Springfield's Unstoppable Climb to Glory

Springfield College just rewrote the script in Division III men’s volleyball by demolishing Carthage in a seismic sweep to clinch their 12th national championship. A packed house of over 1,500 fans at Blake Arena witnessed the return of a dynasty, fueled by the relentless energy of the Pride's senior class.

Last year, Springfield tasted bitter defeat in the championship, but this year, under the unwavering leadership of legendary head coach Charlie Sullivan, the narrative was different. The Pride strutted into the season with one mission: redemption. And boy, did they deliver. With a staggering 25-3 record and a jaw-dropping .358 hitting percentage that blew the doors off the competition, they were a tornado on the court, leaving a trail of defeated teams in their wake.

Durivage: The Carthage Killer

Senior outside hitter Carter Durivage, affectionately dubbed the “Carthage killer” by their head coach JW Kieckhefer, was the architect of Carthage's demise. With 11 kills and a .364 hitting percentage, Durivage was a force of nature, a testament to the strength of Springfield's senior class. "These guys are my best friends," Durivage said, reflecting on his journey. "Going out on top couldn’t be a better way to end our careers."

Transfers That Transformed

But it wasn’t just the seniors who delivered the goods. The Pride’s squad was bolstered by some key transfers, including Jake DesLauriers from Hofstra, who was a revelation. In the championship showdown, DesLauriers had ice in his veins, racking up 16 kills to lead the team. "It’s a special community that’s built here," DesLauriers remarked about the support and unity that defined the Pride's season.

The Championship Moment

The opening set was a nail-biter, with Springfield staring down a 24-22 deficit. But this team doesn’t flinch. Four-time All-American setter Dylan Mulvaney found Durivage, who blasted a shot into the left corner, shifting the momentum. Then, senior middle blocker Will Kirchoff rose like a giant to block Carthage’s attack, knotting the score at 24. The tension was electric, the crowd a thunderous wall of sound, and when Carthage faltered with a service error, Springfield seized the set.

A New Chapter in Division III

This victory doesn’t just mark another title for Springfield; it’s a declaration. The Pride are back, and they’ve just shaken the foundation of Division III volleyball. As the dust settles on this championship, there’s a new storyline to follow: Can Springfield defend their crown, or will another team rise from the shadows, much like Springfield did this season?

Springfield's triumph is a rallying cry to all teams: the throne is theirs, but the hunt is far from over.
