The U.S. Men's National Team went toe-to-toe with Slovenia, and let's just say, it wasn't your typical Saturday showdown. Slovenia walked away with a 3-1 victory in the 2025 Volleyball Nations League in Rio. Yeah, they’re undefeated for a reason.
Early Dominance, Late Collapse
The U.S. flexed early with a 13-4 block advantage. Kyle Hobus led the charge with 13 points, including a team-high 12 kills. But Slovenia had other plans. Gabi Garcia chipped in with 12 points and set the tone with four blocks and two aces.
The first set was a rollercoaster. A Nolan Flexen kill had the U.S. up 19-16. But then, Slovenia stormed back, closing the set with a 9-3 run. Ouch.
Battling Back
The second set? Pure tension. Garcia was on fire, delivering back-to-back plays to knot it at 22. But Slovenia had the last word, taking the set and leaving the U.S. with no answers.
The third set brought a glimmer of hope. Matthew Knigge and Hobus combined for 15 points, flipping the script with a 20-14 lead. This time, they held on, winning 25-20. And just like that, momentum was back.
Can't Close It
Heading into the fourth, the U.S. jumped out to an 8-2 lead thanks to Quinn Isaacson's setup magic. But Slovenia wasn't done. A 7-1 run evened things up, and they sealed the deal, taking the set 25-23.
Let's be real. The U.S. showed flashes of brilliance but couldn't sustain it. Sunday's match against Cuba (both at 1-2) is now a must-win.
That'll do it. The U.S. needs to regroup, fast.
