Penn State men's volleyball is at a crossroads. A 5-13 record might look grim, but Mark Pavlik and his crew aren't backing down. This Friday, they face Charleston at home, marking their 19th match of the season.

Season of Learning

This year has been a wild ride for Pavlik. Last season's 23-7 powerhouse is a memory, but don't count them out. Penn State is still eyeing the NCAA Tournament. The EIVA crown? It's within reach, and a win would mean an automatic NCAA bid.

Pavlik's squad hasn't lost at Rec Hall since 2023. With six of their last eight matches at home, the stage is set for a comeback. "I think the urgency is there," Pavlik said. "I don’t think we’re trying to do more than we’re capable of doing."

Brutal Road, Valuable Lessons

Coming off a grueling road trip against top-15 teams, the Nittany Lions are battle-tested. Pavlik said, "We’ve gone up against the best teams in the country. What have we learned?" The answer is crucial with the EIVA standings so tight.

Penn State currently sits fifth in the conference at 2-2. They're only 1.5 games behind first place George Mason. The chance to face and topple the teams above them, including Charleston, is huge.

Focus on Consistency

Pavlik is pushing for fewer errors and smarter plays. "Let’s be smart with the ball," he insists. Charleston, with a 4-2 conference record and top performers like Xander Bomert, Max Nissen, and Kai Cousins, will test them.

A bye week gave the team a much-needed breather. Now, they're back and ready. "We’re still in total control of our destiny," Pavlik declared. This late push could change everything.

And from here… it's game on.
