The transfer portal strikes again. Maile Chan just dropped a bombshell on Wisconsin volleyball fans.
Chan Makes Her Move
The sophomore libero/defensive specialist announced she’s entering the NCAA transfer portal. Chan took to Instagram on December 19, pouring her heart out to Badger nation: “I’ll hold these memories and girls in the deepest part of my heart. I love you guys more than words can say.”
Let's be real, Chan's move leaves a gaping hole in Wisconsin's defense. She appeared in 21 sets in 2025, adding 20 career digs to her name. Her ability to sub in and serve has been a key asset for the Badgers. But now, Wisconsin has to figure out how to plug that gap.
Libero Depth Takes a Hit
Chan's departure isn't the only one. Addy Horner, a setter, and fellow libero/defensive specialist Aniya Warren are also portal-bound. This exodus comes right after Wisconsin’s tough Final Four loss to Kentucky. You could feel it coming.
With Chan and Warren gone, the libero position is looking thin. The only libero with eligibility in 2026 is freshman Kristen Simon, who started in 2025. Wisconsin's 2026 recruiting class might need to pivot, as it currently includes two outside hitters and two middle blockers. No liberos.
Charlie Fuerbringer, one of the 2025 team captains, summed up the team's emotions perfectly in a comment on Chan’s Instagram: "I can't. Love you so much. I don't wanna be without you guys."
What’s Next?
The transfer portal window is open until January 5. Expect more moves and maybe a surprise or two. But for now, Wisconsin has some serious strategizing to do.
That’ll do it. The Badgers have some big decisions on their plate.
