Japan started the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) 2025 with a bang, and they didn't just show up. They took over.
UNSTOPPABLE START
Japan didn't drop a single set in Ottawa. Four matches. Four straight-set victories. That's not just good. That's dominant. With 12 points, they're sitting pretty at the top of the standings. And it's not just about the wins. It's how they won. The Japanese squad cruised through the Dominican Republic with a convincing 3-0 win (25-19, 25-21, 25-9). When you leave your opponent with only 9 points in a set, you're not just winning—you're sending a message.
ISHIKAWA AND SATO: A DYNAMIC DUO
Mayu Ishikawa and Yoshino Sato are names you'll be hearing a lot this season. Ishikawa, the newly-appointed captain, led the charge with a stellar 20-point performance. Sato backed her up with 19 points. That's 39 points between two players in one match. That's big time. Middle blocker Airi Miyabe put it best: “We’re finding our rhythm, and our system is working. This gives us a strong push heading into Week 2.”
GLOBAL RANKINGS SHAKE-UP
Thanks to their flawless showing, Japan not only topped the Week 1 standings but also jumped from seventh to fifth in the FIVB World Rankings. A leap like that in just one week? That's no joke. Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic, despite their struggles, saw Gaila González leading with 14 points, keeping them in 11th place.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The VNL action resumes from June 18-22, with matches in Türkiye, China, and Serbia. Can Japan keep up the pace? You could feel it coming. This might just be their year.
Watch out, world. Japan means business.
