The U.S. Men's National Team? They fought hard but fell short. Germany took them down 3-2 in a nail-biter at the Volleyball Nations League in Chiba, Japan. This match was chaos. The good kind.
Germany Had the Edge
The U.S. (6-5) needed this win to keep their VNL finals hopes alive. But Germany? They had other plans. They held slight advantages in kills (56-53) and blocks (9-8), and finished with a dominating 8-3 lead in aces. Kyle Hobus led the U.S. with 17 kills and 18 points, but it wasn't enough.
"We kept battling," said U.S. head coach Karch Kiraly. "Credit to Germany. They played really well in those last couple of sets."
Turning Points
The U.S. had their moments. A Nolan Flexen serving run in the third set helped the U.S. race out to a 7-2 lead. His third ace sealed the set, making it look like the U.S. might pull this off. But Germany? They flipped the match in the fourth, running off six points to take a commanding lead. Ethan Champlin and Jeff Jendryk tried to keep the U.S. in it, but Germany wouldn't be denied.
The Final Blow
In the fifth set, the U.S. had a brief 2-0 lead with a Champlin kill and Jendryk block. But Germany responded with a 6-2 run. A service error and a Germany ace later, and the U.S. was staring at a 15-12 defeat. This wasn't just a loss. It was a wake-up call.
The U.S. faces Japan next, needing a win to have any chance at the finals. Will they rise? You could feel it coming.
