The U.S. Women's National Team hit a wall in Rio. Brazil took them down 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-19). And yes, it was as tough as it sounds.
Early Leads, Late Losses
The U.S. had moments. A 14-12 lead in the first set thanks to a Dodson block and Babcock ace had us believing. But then? Brazil went on an 11-2 tear. Set over.
Logan Eggleston led the U.S. with 13 points, 12 of those from kills. But the team just couldn't match the blocks. Brazil had a 12-4 blocking edge. That's not a stat you want.
Second Set Heartbreak
Set two was a rollercoaster. Brazil jumped out 7-3, but the U.S. clawed back to 18-17. Then, a challenge went Brazil's way. They didn't drop another point. Roni Jones-Perry tried with three kills and an ace, but it wasn't enough.
Erik Sullivan, U.S. head coach, said it best: "We just need to find a little more consistency." Yeah, no kidding.
Final Set Hopes Dashed
The third set looked bleak with a 20-10 Brazil lead. But then? A 9-2 U.S. run. Aces from Jones-Perry and Powell, a clutch Amber Igiede kill. Suddenly it was 22-19. But Brazil closed it out with three straight points.
The crowd in Rio was electric, and the home team fed off it. Brazil is now 2-0 in the VNL. The U.S.? 0-2 with a crucial match against Czechia up next.
And just like that, the pressure's on. The U.S. needs to regroup fast. Czechia awaits, and they won't roll over.
