Volleyball's got a new rhythm. And it's all about July.
The July Revolution
Forget everything you knew about tryouts. July is the new kingpin in the beach volleyball calendar. The AVP has flipped the script, making summer the ultimate evaluation period. This isn't just rescheduling—it's a full-blown reset.
Before 2022, tryouts were a headache. Late fall, right in the middle of high school championships. Players torn between finals and tryout nerves. Coaches hated it. Players were exhausted. Parents? Over it.
Now? Club teams form in July. That gives coaches a full August to October window to build their squads before the December hustle. Players who grind through June? They show up ready to dominate. Those who take it easy? They fall behind fast.
Dollars and Sense
Parents, listen up. Your kid's volleyball budget? It's not a suggestion. It's a commitment that kicks off in July. A regional club in Minnesota? $2,200 to $4,400. A national program out of places like Dallas or Southern California? You're looking at $5,300 to over $10,500. Flights, hotels, the whole shebang.
Travel tournaments heat up from December through May, peaking with the USAV Junior Nationals in late June or early July. That’s the big stage.
High School Season: The Team Game
High school volleyball? It's still got its groove. Tryouts hit in early August, with regular seasons running late August through October. State championships? Wrapped by mid-November. It's a sprint, not a marathon.
Matches stick to rally scoring—25 points per set, best-of-five for varsity. JV? Best-of-three. What makes high school unique? Team chemistry. Unlike club ball, it's about building relationships across grades. Playing with seniors as a sophomore? That's where the real learning happens.
Walker, a seasoned player, learned this the hard way: "Your vertical dropped two inches since May. That's not a summer—that's a setback." Harsh? Maybe. But true.
The compressed season means rapid growth. And by the time state championships roll around, the emotional peak is undeniable.
And just like that, volleyball's calendar isn't just a timeline. It's a strategy. Plan your year around it, or risk falling two inches short.
