Professional beach volleyball just leveled up. AVP Tour lands at the Intuit Dome this weekend, bringing the sand inside for a change.
New Venue, Same Vibes
The AVP is flipping the script. This isn't just beach volleyball, it's beach volleyball under the lights of the Clippers' home, and it's happening Friday and Saturday night. Geena Urango of the San Diego Smash is pumped. She knows the game, the city, and the fans.
"If fans come out and watch the event," Urango said, "those who haven’t been to one before would realize just how special and entertaining beach volleyball is." She's not lying. With a history that started at USC, Urango helped shape a dynasty. Fast forward 17 years, she's still running the show.
Legends on the Sand
Urango’s not the only big name hitting the sand. Phil Dalhausser, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist, is making his farewell tour count. The guy's a legend, straight up. The AVP calls him one of the most dominant players ever, and they're not wrong. This is your last chance to catch him live — don't miss it.
And let’s not forget Kelly Cheng and Chaim Schalk of the Miami Mayhem. Both Olympians, both problems for the opposition. Cheng, another USC product, is bringing that Trojan fire back to L.A.
Home Turf Advantage
Back in the standings, L.A. Launch is leading the charge. Megan Kraft and Terese Cannon are ready to defend that top spot at home. "It’s so exciting to play in L.A.," Kraft said. "We’re part of the L.A. Launch this year, so we’re able to represent the city and make it our home event."
Ranking first through four weekends, the Launch is ready to handle business in front of a home crowd. You could feel this one coming. Playing at Intuit Dome is big. No doubt about it.
And just like that, the stage is set for a showdown. Beach volleyball has found a new home, if only for a weekend. Expect fireworks. You felt that.
