UIL Shakes Up Volleyball Playoffs: It's On

The UIL just dropped a bombshell. Volleyball playoffs are getting a facelift, and it's going to shake things up for teams across Texas.

New Playoff Structure

Starting next year, state semifinal matches won't be business as usual. Instead, 10 predetermined sites will host these crucial games. Classes 2A through 6A will see these changes, while Class 1A gets a tournament-style twist. The goal? More consistency, but it's a shake-up for sure.

Stephanie Poole, the seasoned coach from Allen, didn't hold back. "It’s kind of disappointing," she said. After leading her squad to the state semis for the first time since 2006, she's got insight. "We are used to a regional tournament and definitely a state tournament."

The Coaches' Take

Coaches are split. Some see the logic, others like U’iLani Womble from Frisco Wakeland, have their reservations. She knows the value of live scouting. "There is nothing like getting to watch a game with your own eyes," said Womble, who led her team to the Class 5A Division II state title. Watching tape just isn’t the same.

The Basketball Angle

Basketball might be next. The UIL is testing volleyball first, eyeing potential changes for hoops by the 2026-2027 season. The basketball committees are watching closely. They’ll evaluate volleyball's pilot program before making their move.

What's Next?

The predetermined sites for semis aren’t even finalized. This decision, born from extensive discussion, is still evolving. It's a bold move that could redefine playoff atmospheres in Texas.

And just like that… everything could change. Volleyball teams better be ready to adapt. Because this? It’s just the beginning.
