Volleyball fans, the game just changed forever. League One Volleyball (LOVB) is here to take over, and it's not asking for permission. With its inaugural season in January 2025, this league launched with six teams, 17 Olympians, and arenas packed tighter than a Friends reunion.
LOVB's Wild Start
LOVB ain't your grandma's volleyball league. Founded by Katlyn Gao, Peter Hirschmann, and Olympic legend Kevin Wong, this league took a community-up approach. They built a network of 77 clubs across 28 states with over 22,000 young athletes. That's more than just a pipeline—it's a damn superhighway to the pros.
Forget your standard team names like 'Atlanta Aces.' LOVB keeps it simple with city names: LOVB Atlanta, LOVB Houston, and so on. It's like if Apple designed a volleyball league and decided branding was overrated.
2025: The Year It All Began
January 8, 2025, marked the date when Roni Jones-Perry got the first kill in LOVB history, as LOVB Salt Lake took down LOVB Atlanta in four sets. Atlanta shrugged it off, went beast mode, and ended the season with a 13-3 record, thanks to MVP Kelsey Cook and her killer crew: Madi Bugg, Tia Jimerson, and McKenzie Adams.
Not to be outdone, LOVB Houston came in hot with Jordan Thompson, who was a scoring machine with 256 points and 224 kills. Meanwhile, Annie Drews Schumacher returned from injury to drag Madison from a 1-7 slump to 8-8. Talk about a comeback queen.
Underdogs Steal the Show
The playoffs were straight-up bonkers. LOVB Austin and LOVB Omaha, both with trash regular-season records of 5-11, crashed the party at the KFC Yum! Center. Austin, trailing 0-2 in the semis against top-seeded Atlanta, pulled off a reverse sweep. That’s main character energy if I ever saw it.
With LOVB setting new standards, the real question is: Who's gonna stop them? Spoiler alert: nobody. This league is a different animal, and the volleyball world better buckle up.
