India's Unstoppable Surge
When was the last time you saw an underdog sprint through the pool stage without dropping a match? Exactly. India's women's volleyball team just did the unthinkable at the 2026 CAVA Women's Volleyball Championship, smashing through the pool stage unbeaten and landing themselves in the semifinals. This isn't just a win; it's a statement.
From Chaos to Coordination
Not long ago, things were shaky for Indian volleyball. The FIVB Board of Administration, along with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), had to step in and revoke the Volleyball Federation of India’s provisional recognition. A Steering Committee took the reins, ensuring the women's team could compete despite not being registered for the 2026 international participation programme. And, oh boy, did they compete.
Under the guidance of new head coach Jana Kulan, the team transformed into a powerhouse. Kulan, appointed through FIVB's Volleyball Empowerment coaching support, became the first foreign coach to lead the Indian women’s squad. Her international experience and high-performance development skills brought a fresh vision that these players soaked up like a sponge.
The Matches That Turned Heads
India opened with a nail-biting 3-2 victory over hosts Nepal, showing resilience that would make the Columbus Fury proud. Then came a steamrolling 3-0 win against the Maldives, where Arya Kuriyedath's 12 points led the charge. With momentum on their side, they swept Kyrgyzstan 3-0, securing top spot in Pool A. Anusree Kambrath Poyilil and her teammates played with precision, not just crushing the competition but redefining their volleyball identity.
