You can’t teach instinct. You can’t fake grit.
And for over a decade, Erik Shoji has brought both, and more, to the heart of U.S. volleyball’s backcourt.
From a volleyball dynasty in Hawaii to three Olympic Games, multiple medals, and a global highlight reel of impossible digs, Shoji isn’t just a libero, he’s a blueprint.
And in 2025? He’s still diving, still leading, and still defining defense at the highest level.
🌺 Volleyball Bloodline Built in Hawaii
Born August 24, 1989 in Honolulu, Erik Shoji didn’t find volleyball, it found him.
🧠 His dad? Dave Shoji, a coaching legend who built the University of Hawaii women’s program into a national powerhouse.
🏀 His mom? A former D1 baller.
🏐 His brother, Kawika Shoji? U.S. national team setter.
At Punahou School, Erik led his team to three straight state titles, and the Shoji name became synonymous with smart, scrappy, elite-level play.

He didn’t just get low, he made entire rallies possible with one read.
